Repurposed Bridgeport Mill Parts

10” x 1.5” x 1.5”

Background

This project began as a box of scrapped parts from a 1940s Bridgeport Mill. This machine is nearly triple my age and needed repair, as it was once used to cut minerals for the Geoscience Department. Coming into work I would always gravitate to the box and start putting pieces together. These parts yearned for use once more.

Overview

This object has the spirit of the minerals the metals were smelted from, the factory workers who first machined them, the unknown number of users during its lifetime, and now my own. What is the nature of this spirit? Time will tell.

Use

This object has a variety of functions. In its full assembly it is weighted and powerful. It finds itself at home in the use as a Wand: a magical implement for directing energy towards a purpose. In its compact form it finds use as an Awl: laying out and marking materials. Are these different functions? Who am I to say?
